Meet Soriah

The world-renowned throat singer Enrique Ugalde (SoRIAH) has accumulated over 20 years of teaching experience and has been singing Tuvan-style throat singing (Khöömei) since 1998. Inspired by a live performance of Throat SingingMasters, Huun Huur Tu, he has gone on to tour the world with his own project Soriah and has traveled to the Central Asian Republic of Tuva 11 times to perform, collaborate and compete as a Khöömeigie.
He achieved third place at the 2008 ThroatSinging Symposium in Tuva, the highest ranking attained by a non-Tuvan participant in the Symposium's history. He was also the recipient of the award for best foreigner at the 2008 Ustuu-Khuree Festival in Chadanaa, Tuva. In 2014, he secured second place in the Tuvan National Kargyraa Competition. His innovative contributions to the art of Tuvan Throat Singing were recognized in 2016. In 2019, he received the award for Best Kargyraa Performance at the Khöömei in the Center of Asia International Competition in Kyzyl, Tuva. In August 2020, he was awarded the title of Foreign Wizard of Khöömei. In 2021, he received the award for Best Kargyraa Performance.

What previous students say about Soriah
"Studying Tuvan Throat Singing with SoRIAH(Enrique Ulgade) It begins as a primal recognition. Perhaps deeper than mind and thoughts to an animistic remembrance and soul resonance. So I was drawn towards the vibrations emanating from the ancient mystic core of this avant-shamanic man. First witnessed within the auric field of his vocal alchemy channeling landscapes and ancestors left me in cosmosis. Subatomic recalibration received from outside into my beating eardrums synchronized heartbeat and brainwaves upon breath respired, inspired. Then since our initial lesson, more so a transmission, I first felt this force spark reverberation from the inside out. Essence to belly to chest to throat to tongue to shake space itself. And I was hooked to look further, delve deeper. The journey has been recursive as we spiral syllables that fractal fundamental tones into spectral harmonics. I hear rainbows and taste melodies. What a gift to not just play but become an instrument. To access a teacher whose lineage is not mere cliche but living threads woven with embodied Tuvan masters in the sacred lands of origin is a rare treasure and true blessing. That he is an archetypal artist, a keen mentor, an exacting guide and, perhaps most vital, a spirited human, a good person, a real one, fleshes out the experience of learning from SoRIAH. May more seeking attunement benefit from the tonic of his sonic offerings".

"I have had the honor and delight to study with Enrique every week for the past two years. Not only is he a master of the throat singing tradition, but perhaps more importantly, he is an incredibly gifted and empathic teacher. Wise, witty, patient, sincere, passionate and kind are only a few of the beautiful qualities that come to mind and heart. The majority of our lessons are online and honestly none of the potency of his transmission is lost. Every lesson I feel uplifted and astonished at the consistent new levels of voice activation and empowerment. You’ll not only be able to connect to new ways of self expression, but unlock keys to the infinite potential of your body and soul. I cannot recommend this course enough to all those on the path of Self discovery and radical embodiment."
-Eric Monkhouse, Psychotherapist and Sound Alchemist
"I have been a fan of Tuvan music and spirituality for a long time, over 30 years but I only recently took a throat singing workshop with Enrique Uglade, SoRIAH. His depth of knowledge is very apparent in his introductory lecture on his journey to mastery. I soon found out that I only knew about 10% of the technique it takes to become a throat singer. Luckily Uglade keeps no secrets from his students and lays the process out bare with clear explanations. He guides the group in warm up exercises, so important, before the lesson begins. His demonstrations and explanations of the technique are thorough and clear. He spent time with each individual student to make sure they were using the correct mouth posture and vocal tones, much the same way I would teach an art class, with constructive feedback on technique. He made me feel seen and heard, which is very important in a learning setting. What I learned from Enrique Uglade about Tuvan culture and "throat" singing is still ringing in my body today.
As someone who has both advanced degrees from schools and advanced education from oral traditions, it is clear to me that Uglade has a mastery of his art commensurate to the highest degree. As a lifelong learner and fellow instructor I highly recommend his teaching."
